This pandemic has been hard for everyone. Just when the sun set on December 31, 2020, people were hopeful for midnight and what would come with the new year in 2021. However, we aren’t seeing much change in the state of the world. BUT, there is a lot happening in the world of lifestyle, pop-culture, beauty, and fashion… my personal favorite world to escape to. Here are some of the trends and updates that you must get yourself up to speed with — at least before you start a conversation with me!
Uh… Lil Nas X is a Satan worshipper?
Some of you may not recognize the name “Lil Nas X,” but I can guarantee you that you have heard the very famous, very catchy, and very obnoxious songs “Panini” and “Old Town Road.” Lil Nas X started to fall off the radar after these two songs blew up and ran their course. As of early this week, Lil Nas X came out with a new music video for the song “Montero.” When the rapper first started releasing music, he prided himself on the fact that his songs were appropriate for children to listen to and sing along with, and both of his songs blew up on Tik-Tok and had dances created to go with them. This song, however, is full of bad language and inappropriate references, definitely showing that Lil Nas X has turned his act around, and not for the better.
Satan shoes. You heard that right. SATAN SHOES.
Rapper Lil Nas X, Nike, and human blood? How do these things even make sense to connect. I still find this hard to believe and out-of-character for this rapper, but he has released his own line of Air Force 97’s “Satan shoes.” There were only 666 pairs of this shoe made, and they sold out in less than a minute. He collaborated with a streetwear company called “MSCHF” to create these shoes. For the record, not Nike. Love you and thank you Nike. The shoes not only have an evil and devilish theme, but each shoe contains a drop of blood drawn from the body of MSCHF employees. WHAT?!
The shoes are “modified” Nike’s. They were not cleared to be released by Nike, obviously, and they are not happy to have their brand tainted with encouraging devil worshipping and human blood in their… shoes. Nike claimed that they are filing a trademark claim against MSCHF, is planning to sue the company, and wants their customers to know that these shoes are not their brand.
The verse Luke 10:18 is also written on the side of the shoe, which says, “I watched Satan fall from heaven like lightning.”
Kendall Jenner’s supposedly sensitive tequila batch — “Añejo 818”
Is it racially and culturally insensitive, or just another example of the Kardashian/Jenner family taking the wrath of social media?
Recently, model, reality T.V. show star, and my personal favorite Kardashian/Jenner, Kendall Jenner, announced the pursuit to create her own tequila brand called “Tequila 818.” She said that it has been a 3.5 year journey creating the batch and that it’s been a “journey to create the best tasting tequila.”
Almost immediately after this announcement, people on social media platforms decided to cancel Jenner for the production of her tequila brand. Many people were worried about the exploitation of Mexican and Latino people, cultural insensitivity, and exploitation of workers who harvest agave to make tequila. Also, people came for her in the misspelling of the drink. She referred to the tequila beverage as “blanco tequila” when, in Mexican culture, it is pronounced “tequila blanco.” That screamed to many Mexico native tequila drinkers that Jenner didn’t really know what she was talking about. Was she creating a drink to follow the trend of a lot of other celebs? All in all, people found many reasons to add Jenner’s newly announced drink to the “Cancel-Culture” list of 2020–2021.
However, many people wondered if this was just another way for people to give the very famous Kardashian-Jenner family a hard time on social media. After all, people are always looking for a reason to criticize the family. And Jenner is not the first one to start a brand in the drink industry. Many other celebrities have experimented with created their own batches of alcohol, too, like Ian Somerhalder, George Clooney, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
So, do you agree that the frenzy of social media is just trying to criticize the Kardashian/Jenner family per usual, or does Kendall Jenner need to spice up on her knowledge of of this spicy Mexico-native alcohol?
New Editor-in-Chief of teen Vogue FIRED before she even starts her first day on the job
Being a teenager is all about maturing and self growth. I know I have definitely been in a situation where I said something ignorant without thinking that I didn’t mean. Luckily, not over social media. In this day and age, no one is safe.
Alexi McCammond had just been hired to be the newest Editor-in-Chief of Teen Vogue. I can’t even begin to imagine how excited she was to be given this opportunity.
McCammond explained to her interviewers that she tweeted some things a decade or so ago that she deeply regrets, but are still out there for the world to see. She was 17 when she made the tweet and has apologized profusely since then. Her interviewers explained to her that it was ok, everyone makes mistakes, and she was hired regardless.
Then, on Tuesday, March 16, 2021, the Atlanta spa shootings occurred and 8 Asian-Americans were killed.
This caused the topic of McCammond’s tweets to resurface, and after her appointment, there was a revolt regarding her be hired from the Teen Vogue Staff and she was condemned for the tweet, ultimately resulting in her losing her job at Teen Vogue before she even started her first day on the job.
So people — love others, respect others and yourself, and don’t be stupid. Anything you say or post on the internet is there forever, no matter what you think.
Most memorable looks of the 2021 Grammy Awards
I look forward to the Grammy’s every year, mostly because I love to see what type of outfits celebrities are strutting on the runway. After a lot of long months of quarantine and isolation, many stars came out with a bang, since the Grammy’s have been one of the first award shows since the pandemic struck that stars were able to walk the red carpet and accept their well-deserved awards in person. I missed the glitz and the glam of the Grammy pre-shows and getting to see all the gorgeous looks of the night. Props to ALL the designers and models involved for putting on more of a show than the awards themselves (sorry not sorry)!
Royal family turmoil — Meghan & Harry are in the U.S.?
Most of you know Meghan Markle and Prince Harry of Sussex. These two are the most gorgeous and, at least for the royal family, unexpected pair. Would this fairytale be doomed from a happily ever after from the start?
Many of us probably wondered why we didn’t see much of the couple in public. After all, this was one of the first cases where the two met without the influence of those in the royal family. It turns out, there were many reasons why Markle and Prince Harry kept there distance from the rest of the world.
Markle was bombarded from the start of she and Prince Harry’s dating announcement. She and those close to her were constantly bombarded by the media, and she and Prince Harry even had to fight legal battles to get fake stories out of papers.
In 2017, Harry proposed to Markle and they were married in 2018. I’m sure most of you remember this happening… any royal wedding is like a second Christmas morning.
Their wedding was celebrated worldwide, and it was obvious how in love the two were from the start.
But — being a royal couple is apparently not all that it’s cracked up to be, and the couple wanted to do things their own way. That wouldn’t fly in the royal family.
Because of Meghan Markle’s racial background, the royal family started to worry that their child would come out looking “too dark” and that he wouldn’t be fair-skinned and red-headed like the rest of the boys in the royal family. She also had a rocky relationship with her father. He did not attend the royal wedding in 2018 and she said that she hasn’t seen him since before then. Her parents were divorced when she was only six-years-old, and separation would not fly in the strict royal family. Also, Markle was an actress in L.A. and did not come from a royal or English background, which was unheard of in a royal marriage.
Recently, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry relocated with their son, Archie, to California, where they have decided they would be more happy. They left their titles back in England and moved to the U.S. to start a new life for themselves and raise their son in an ultimately more free and less judgmental environment.

The end of an era — Keeping Up With the Kardashians
On October 14, 2007, the first season of Keeping Up With the Kardashians aired on T.V. Since then, they have had a huge following and have become some of the most famous names in the world. The Kardashian/Jenner family broke the news in September that KUWTK would be coming to an end, and the final season aired in March 2021. According to Kim Kardashian, the family just needs a “break,” which is understandable after almost 20 seasons of filming. The Kardashian/Jenner family said that at the time it aired, they didn’t even think that they would make it to season 2. Kourtney was the first to quit the show after season 18 because she had an explosive fight with Kim and was being criticized by not only her family, but her fans for her bad attitude and negative behavior.
Not to worry, though, KUWTK fans, I can guarantee you that for as long as you have the internet, you will be seeing enough of the Kardashian/Jenner family.
