Everything You Need To Know About The 2021 Met Gala

“What’s the Met Gala?”

Don’t even get me started, because I really could go on for hours about this event. Two points to help you better understand… first: the Met Gala is like Christmas Day for a fashion major and second: it is the fashion world’s equivalent to the Oscars.

The Met Gala is typically held on the first Monday in May, but because of the chaos of COVID, it has been pushed to the fall of 2021. Now in its 73rd year, the gala was first established in 1948 to commemorate the opening of the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art museum’s new Costume Institute.

On the evening of the Met each year, designers, models, and Hollywood stars gather together, wearing the year’s most over-the-top looks to celebrate the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. Each guest invited to attend and they are chosen by Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour.

The queen herself, Editor-in-Chief, Anna Wintour.

I mean, come on, tell me that you don’t want to be her when you grow up…

Theme | 2021

American Fashion.

“What the heck does this mean?” you may ask? Yea, me too. Allow me to enlighten you.

The theme will be explored in two different ways. Grace Cook of Porter Magazine says, “On the choice of theme, Max Hollein, the Marina Kellen French Director of the Met, commented, “Fashion is both a harbinger of cultural shifts and a record of the forces, beliefs and events that shape our lives… In looking at the past through this lens, we can consider the aesthetic and cultural impact of fashion on historical aspects of American life.”

In essence, God Bless America, Vogue Magazine, and the uniqueness of fashion in the USA.

Who’s hosting? | 2021

As if this year couldn’t get any better due to the fact that there is actually a Met Gala in 2021, you will never believe who the co-hosts are for the “American fashion” themed Ball.

Drumroll please…

I mean, look at that lineup! Singer/songwriter Billie Eilish, Japanese tennis star Naomi Osaka, actor Timothée Chalamet, and National Youth Poet Laureate Amanda Gorman. You can’t tell me that the fate of this event won’t be in good hands.

Anna Wintour, Tom Ford, and head of Instagram Adam Mosseri will serve as honorary chairs for this year’s Gala, completing the all-star line-up.
